The Stanley family of Sutton Bonington, Nottinghamshire

Family origins - John Stanley of Sutton Bonington, deceased 1557, may be Sir John Stanley, son of James Stanley the Bishop of Ely. If this is correct, then the Stanley family of Sutton Bonington are linked with the Stanley family of Ashton in Makerfield, Lancashire.

Evidence -

  1. The 1527 will of Sir John Stanley, son of James Stanley the Bishop of Ely, is an original manuscript, and not a PCC transcription. I conclude this will was not proved.
  2. Sir John Stanley divorced his wife, Lady Margaret, and entered Westminster as monk.
  3. Lady Margaret subsequently married Sir Urian Brereton, and Sir John Stanley's estates passed to him.
  4. The 1557 will of John Stanley of Sutton Bonington was proved.
  5. In the 1557 will of John Stanley of Sutton Bonington - John bequeaths his lands to his son which the 12 men shall find to be his heir. John must know who should be his heir!!
  6. The age of John Stanley of Sutton Bonington in 1551 - "old in body, but of good remembrance" - about 70 years or older - this fits with Sir John Stanley son of James Stanley the Bishop of Ely.
  7. The surname Pyle occurs - 1) maiden name of the wife of John Stanley of Sutton Bonington, and 2) 1602 transaction at Huyton between Gerard and Elizabeth Stanley, and John Pyle.
  8. The Arms of Henry Stanley of Sutton Bonington appear to be very similar to the Arms of Sir John Stanley.
  9. There is no conflict with the key event years for this family using 1530 as a year for John Stanley of Sutton Bonington marrying Joan Pyle.
The Stanley family of Sutton Bonington link with Little Eaton near Duffield, and Leicester.
This page relates to "The House of Stanley from the 12th Century" Chapter 55.

To be included in the following family structures, a parish baptism record identifies the father and/or a surviving will identifies a relationship. Maiden names have been determined from parish records and/or references in wills. Dates for baptisms, marriages or burials are for Sutton Bonington unless otherwise stated.

Marple Hall - a Stanley and Bradshaw link

The Vernons held the manors of Marple and Wybersley until Sir George Vernon who died without male heirs. His estates were divided between his two daughters. Margaret, the eldest, who married Sir Thomas Stanley, second son of Edward the Earl of Derby. The other daughter, Dorothy, married Sir John Manners.

On the death of Lady Margaret in 1596, the manors of Marple and Wybersley came into the possession of her eldest son, Sir Edward Stanley of Tonge. Sir Edward having no male heirs sold the manors in 1606.

Henry Bradshaw, younger son of William Bradshaw of Derbyshire, bought the estates of Marple Hall and Wybersley. http://www.marple-uk.com/Hall1.htm
