Historical facts and
references relating to Storeton or the Stanley family of
Storeton
Storeton, Cheshire -
Before 1400, Storeton was the ancient home of the
Stanley family.

Granted at the special request of William Stanley of Hooton, kt.,
by others, to Peter Stanley,
younger son of William, of lands in Little Storeton
and in Great Storeton.
Peter
Stanley (1504 to 1592) is
the ancestor of the Stanley family of Moor Hall,
Lancashire, and was buried at Ormskirk 24th July 1592
(Reference Chapter 7 in "The House of
Stanley")
Land lease agreement
- The Public Record Office at Kew has a legal
agreement dated 1586 - reference PL 17-48 -
261 and 262. The agreement is between Sir Thomas Gerrard, Elizabeth his wife, their son Thomas Gerrard,
esquire, Richard Standley, James Rogerson and
William Slyneheade, concerning 30 acres of
pasture in Ashton in Makerfield in the parish
of Winwick. The agreement is
for the whole lifetime of Richard and the
whole lifetime of Thomas Standley, the second
son of William
Standley, Richard's brother.
Added 1 - Acknowledgement by
Elizabeth at Ashe in the County of Derby
before, John Vernon, esquire, of
Sidburye, and John Francis, esquire, of Farmek? in
the aforesaid county.
Added 2 - Acknowledgement by Richard
Standley at Lancaster before Thomas Walmysley,
Serjeant at Law.
Notes -
This lease, plus the will of
Richard Stanley of Storeton (1599) provides
some proof that Henry Stanley of Storeton has
brothers. The lease does not give ancestral
clues, however it does imply that Richard
travelled. The term of this lease does not
match the term of the lease for the farm
Highly Carr listed in Richard's will.
The last signature on the
lease has the date of 25th March 1586.
Highly
Carr farm lease
The item list with Richard Stanley's
will is very specific about the lease of a farm
called Highly Carr - the lease is for 51 years after
the death of Sir Thomas Gerard of Bryn".
As Richard was holding the lease in 1598 and Sir
Thomas Gerard did not die until 1601 this implies
that he or perhaps his father had been granted the
lease as part of a settlement by the earlier Sir
Thomas Gerard i.e. the one who died sometime around
1550-60. Therefore the lease may have been running
about forty years by the time it was mentioned in
Richard's will. From the following references, the
lease reverted to the Gerard family either during or
before 1597.
